Jill Scott was born on April 4, 1972 on the 4th of April 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania to her mother Joyce Scott. The family was also dominated by her grandmother. She grew up as a single child. Scott attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls. After graduating her school, she went to Temple University. While working two part-time jobs, Scott also studied secondary teaching in Temple University. She planned on becoming a teacher of English at a secondary school. This dream however, ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit the college after a year of studying and becoming an aide to teachers. The path she took to her career started as a spoken-word artist and performing in live poetry readings. She then teamed up with Amir Quest Love Thompson from The Roots. They were able to collaborate in writing You Got Me. In Roots' performance, she revealed herself as an artist. Following that, she started collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. Also, she was an actor on her participation in the Canada stage of the Broadway musical production Rent. She was hired by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
